DHL has a climate projection goal of being carbon neutral by 2050 and has set out milestones along the way, such as reducing emissions by 50% compared to 2007 levels by 2025.
To do this, we have introduced carbon neutral shipping solutions including delivering parcels on foot, by e-bikes, electric vehicles and by boat on the River Thames. We are also encouraging our employees to become GoGreen specialists and undertake climate protection activities such as planting trees and becoming greener in their everyday life.
When sending a parcel, there are a few things you can do to help reduce carbon emissions. The packaging you use can make a big difference – almost a third of all plastic produced is for packaging and only 14% will be recycled, according to a report by the World Economic Forum and Ellen MacArthur Foundation.
If you're sending a parcel with DHL Service Point, you can use our free recyclable packaging. Or, if you're sending through DHLitNow where you use your own packaging, we recommend using a biodegradable and recyclable option. Currently, we don't offer carbon-neutral delivery and carbon offset when booking a collection with us over the phone.
Choose packaging to match the size of your items so that you don't need much, if any, parcel filler (such as packing peanuts). Most packaging filler is instantly thrown away into landfill, so where possible minimise its use and make sure you use a biodegradable option.
