Vietnam country facts
  • Stretching over 1,650 kilometres from north to south, Vietnam features a narrow shape that encompasses a wide range of climates and landscapes, including mountains, forests, and extensive coastlines.
  • Located about 70km from Ho Chi Minh City, there’s a system of underground tunnels known as the Cu Chi tunnels, spanning over 200km. These were dug during the Vietnam War by Viet Cong soldiers to move undetected and launch surprise attacks. These tunnels are now preserved as part of Vietnam’s history.
  • The country is one of the world's largest producers of coffee, second only to Brazil, with the majority being robusta beans and the main export of Vietnam is cashews, with the USA being one of the biggest buyers of Vietnamese cashews.
  • Red weddings are the norm in Vietnam, with the bride wearing a red dress rather than a White. This is because the colour red symbolises happiness and good luck.
  • Despite its historical strife, the country is known for its high literacy rate, which exceeds 94%, underscoring a strong national emphasis on education.
  • The áo dài, a fitted, full-length dress worn over trousers, is a symbol of national pride and is commonly worn during cultural and festive celebrations.
  • Traditional Vietnamese architecture can be seen in the communal houses and pagodas that dot the landscape, many of which are built on stilts with elaborate roof designs.
  • Vietnamese cuisine is known for its balance of five taste elements, commonly seen in dishes like Pho, a noodle soup considered a national staple, and Banh Mi, a fusion sandwich influenced by French colonialism.
