Vanuatu country facts
  • The name Vanuatu combines the Melanesian words "vanua" (land) and "tu" (to stand), symbolising the nation's independence achieved in 1980 after years under British and French colonial rule.
  • Mount Yasur on Tanna Island is one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes, erupting continuously for centuries. In late 2024, it remained at Alert Level 2, with ongoing explosions emitting gas, steam, and ash.
  • Vanuatu is one of the most linguistically diverse places on Earth, with over 100 indigenous languages. Bislama, a creole based on English, is the most commonly spoken and acts as the country’s main language.
  • The islands are home to the Pacific flying fox, a large fruit bat essential to the ecosystem. These bats play a crucial role in pollinating native plants and dispersing seeds, maintaining the health of Vanuatu's dense rainforests.
  • Vanuatu has the famous wreck of the SS President Coolidge, a World War II ship that sank near Espiritu Santo, which is a popular site for divers.
  • The country contains blue holes, which are freshwater lagoons created by underground streams that resurface as springs, especially on Espiritu Santo.
