Turkmenistan country facts
  • The Darvaza gas crater, nicknamed “Door to Hell”, is located in Turkmenistan’s Karakum Desert. It was set alight by geologists after a drilling rig collapsed in 1971. What was a short-term safety measure has been burning since then.
  • Turkmenistan is the only country granted permanent neutrality by the United Nations; a unique diplomatic status recognised since 1995.
  • Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan, holds the Guinness World Record for the highest density of white marble buildings, with more than 500 structures covering over 4.5 million square metres.
  • Every August, Turkmenistan celebrates Melon Day, a national holiday honouring its prized muskmelons for their size and sweetness. The holiday was established in 1994 under the leadership of Saparmurat Niyazov, the country's first president.
  • The Akhal-Teke horse, often called the “golden horse” for its shimmering coat, is the national animal and symbol of pride in Turkmenistan’s heritage.
  • Carpets are so culturally significant in Turkmenistan that there's a dedicated Ministry of Carpet and a national museum housing hundreds of traditional designs.
