Tonga country facts
  • Tonga is the only Pacific nation never formally colonised. While it became a British protected state in 1900, the Kingdom retained its sovereignty, with the monarchy maintaining internal governance and cultural autonomy.
  • Each year, humpback whales travel 3,000 miles from Antarctica to Tonga’s warm waters to breed and raise their calves. This rare migration makes Tonga one of the few places where people can swim alongside them in the wild.
  • Niuafo’ou, Tonga’s northernmost island, was once known as “Tin Can Island” for its mail system. With no harbour, locals swam to passing ships to exchange letters sealed in tins. This practice lasted until an airstrip was built in 1983.
  • Tonga is the only remaining monarchy in the Pacific, with a lineage over a thousand years old. King Tupou VI plays a key role in governance and cultural unity while promoting community initiatives in education and health.
  • The Tongan alphabet comprises 17 letters, including a unique glottal stop represented by an apostrophe. This glottal stop is a consonant that can change the meaning of words, highlighting the language's unique phonetic structure.
  • Positioned just west of the International Date Line, Tonga is one of the first places on Earth to see the new day. Its unique location made it a global focus during millennium celebrations and still draws visitors chasing the first sunrise.
