  • Over 90% of Tajikistan is mountainous, with half the country sitting above 3,000 metres. The Pamir Mountains, often called the Roof of the World, form part of a UNESCO-listed national park and feature some of the highest peaks and roads on the planet​.
  • Iskanderkul Lake, named after Alexander the Great, is known for its changing colours and dramatic setting. According to local legend, his horse Bucephalus drowned there and is said to appear grazing by moonlight​.
  • The Pamir Highway is one of the highest roads in the world, reaching more than 4,600 metres above sea level. It is known for its altitude, isolation and extraordinary mountain scenery​.
  • Embroidery, carpet weaving, and pottery are popular handicrafts in Tajikistan. Chakan embroidery is a distinctive form of decorative stitching on clothing and household items often depicting mythological figures and elements of nature.
  • The Nurek Dam, located on the Vakhsh River, is one of the tallest embankment dams in the world, standing at 300 metres (984 feet) high and generating about 70% of Tajikistan's electricity.
  • Tajikistan is one of the world’s most remittance-dependent economies. A significant number of families rely on income sent by relatives working abroad, which has accounted for nearly 27% of the country’s GDP in recent years​.
