Samoa country facts

  • Samoa’s two main islands, Upolu and Savai’i, are of volcanic origin with fertile soils and rugged landscapes.
  • Mount Silisili, on Savai’i, is the nation’s highest peak at 1,858 metres.
  • The Alofaaga Blowholes, located in the village of Taga on Savai’i, are formed by lava tubes. When ocean waves crash into them, water propels high into the air, creating an impressive natural display.
  • Fa’a Samoa, or “the Samoan way,” refers to the island’s traditional lifestyle. It emphasises respect for elders, communal living, and adherence to cultural protocols – values that continue to shape daily life.
  • Samoa was the first Pacific island nation to gain independence, achieving sovereignty from New Zealand in 1962 after periods of colonial rule by Germany and New Zealand.
  • Due to its location just west of the International Date Line, Samoa is one of the first places on Earth to see the sunrise, which attracts New Year’s Eve travellers.
  • Weaving and tattooing (tatau) are key elements of Samoan culture. Weaving products include traditional mats, baskets and clothing, while tatau symbolises status and heritage.
  • Rugby is Samoa’s most popular sport. The national team, Manu Samoa, has a strong international presence, and many Samoans have gone on to play professional rugby and American football abroad, especially in the US, Australia, and New Zealand.
