New Caledonia country facts

  • New Caledonia is surrounded by the world’s largest lagoon, covering around 24,000km². Protected by the 1,600 km long New Caledonian Barrier Reef, this UNESCO World Heritage Site supports a variety of marine species.
  • The territory holds a unique political status as a “sui generis collectivity” of France, giving it a high level of autonomy within the French Republic. This is set out in a dedicated chapter of the French Constitution.
  • New Caledonia is home to unique species found nowhere else on Earth. The flightless kagu is known for its distinctive call (almost like a dog’s bark), while the New Caledonian crow uses tools like twigs and leaves to extract insects from hard-to-reach places.
  • The Kanak people are Indigenous inhabitants of New Caledonia, with a cultural heritage including traditional customs and languages. They maintain a deep connection to the land, reflected in their music, dance, and ceremonies.
  • Nickel mining plays a central role in New Caledonia’s economy. The territory is estimated to hold about 10% of global nickel reserves, although this has raised environmental and social challenges alongside economic opportunity.
  • The Amédée Lighthouse, built in Paris in the 1860s and shipped to New Caledonia, stands 56 metres tall. It remains one of the tallest lighthouses in the world and is open to visitors on Amédée Island.
