Nauru country facts
  • Nauru receives only around 200 tourists each year. Queen Elizabeth II is one of the few high-profile individuals to have visited Nauru, having made a stop during her 1982 South Pacific tour.
  • At just eight square miles in size, Nauru is the world’s smallest island nation (only the Vatican and Monaco are smaller). The island has no rivers or protected nature reserves, and its airport runway spans almost its entire width.
  • Phosphate mining dominated Nauru’s economy for most of the 20th century, leaving over 90% of the land unsuitable for farming due to soil degradation. Nauru is now focused on sustainable development.
  • Despite having only about 30 kilometres of paved road, Nauru has a short railway line, which was originally built to support phosphate mining.
  • The Australian dollar is used as the official currency in Nauru, reflecting its close economic ties with Australia.
