  • In 2011, the Marshall Islands established the world's largest shark sanctuary, protecting an area nearly three times the size of France. Commercial shark fishing is banned entirely across the nation's waters​.
  • Within its lagoons and water mass, the Marshall Islands is home to over 1,000 species of fish and around 160 species of coral, making its reef systems among the richest marine environments on Earth​.
  • Between 1946 and 1958, the United States conducted 67 nuclear tests in the Marshall Islands. Today, efforts to manage environmental risks continue, and Nuclear Victims Remembrance Day is observed each year to honour the resilience of affected communities​.
  • In 2022, the Marshall Islands became one of the first countries to achieve full access to clean drinking water through a nationwide filtration initiative​.
