Maldives are an independent island country, within the Indian Ocean. There are over 1,200 islands grouped into 26 atolls, making it one of the world's most dispersed countries extending more than 510 miles. The capital island of Maldives is Male, which is about 400 miles from neighbouring country Sri Lanka. All of the islands are flat, none rising to more than 6 feet above sea level and are protected from monsoon seasons by surrounding coral.
