Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands, located in the English Channel just off the coast of Normandy, France. Though it is a Crown Dependency of the United Kingdom, it has its own legal and financial systems, and its culture reflects a mix of French and British influences. Jersey is known for its strong sense of identity, history of fortifications and a cuisine that includes seafood, dairy, and local produce. Jersey also has one of the largest tidal ranges in the world, with sea levels rising and falling by up to 12 metres. DHL Express delivers across the island, including to St Helier and other towns and rural locations.

Country facts
  • Previously part of the Duchy of Normandy, it became part of the Anglo-Norman realm under William the Conqueror after the Battle of Hastings in 1066. King John lost mainland Normandy to France in 1204, but Channel Islanders chose to remain loyal to the English Crown. French was the official language until the 1960s.
  • There are three self-governing British Isles known for their Crown Dependencies but not part of the United Kingdom; The Bailiwicks of Jersey and Guernsey and the Isle of Man.
  • Jersey has unique culinary ingredients – a leftover of their self-sufficient history and blend of British and French influences. Black butter or “du nièr beurre” is unique to the island – it is actually a type of apple jam made with cider!
  • The Island’s military history can be explored through the tunnels and other defences built by the Nazis under the 5-year German occupation during World War II.
  • Jersey Royal potato’s status as Protected Designation of Origin means that, as with Champagne in France, you can’t use the name if it was not cultivated in Jersey. The climate and the seaweed fertiliser ensure a thin skin and unique flavour. Look out for vodka made from Jersey Royal potatoes.
  • Not short of fables, fairy folklore and unusual traditions, watch out for the Black Dog of Bouley Bay, a popular legend in Jersey folklore.
