Iceland is a Nordic island country situated between the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. Culturally linked with Europe, Iceland is one of the least populated countries in the region, with a population of approximately 380,000 people. The capital city, Reykjavík, is home to a large percentage of the population and serves as the cultural and economic heart of the nation.

Iceland's unique geographical position on a rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates results in frequent volcanic eruptions, contributing to its dramatic landscape. One of the country's most popular attractions is Geysir, a geothermal area renowned for its hot springs and geysers. Visitors are drawn to Iceland's beauty, from its majestic waterfalls and glaciers to its rugged fjords and lava fields, making it a captivating destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers.

As one of the world’s leading courier services delivering to locations in more than 220 countries and territories worldwide, you can trust DHL Express to deliver your package to Iceland safely and efficiently.

Iceland country facts
  • Founded in 930 AD, Iceland is home to one of the first parliaments in the world. The Alþingi, which is Icelandic for ‘Assembly’ ran until 1800 in Thingvellir, until it was re-established in Reykjavík following a 45-year hiatus.
  • Iceland is one of the most sparsely populated countries on Earth, with around 8 people per square mile. The capital city of Reykjavík is home to around a third of the country's population, as much of the landmass is inhabitable due to active volcanoes.
  • Fancying a Big Mac? Unfortunately, it’s not possible to order one in Iceland, due to there not being a McDonald's. There used to be a few McDonald’s franchises in Reykjavík, however the last restaurant closed in 2009. The last cheeseburger ever sold in Iceland is still on display in their National Museum.
  • If seeing the Northern Lights is on your bucket list, then Iceland is one of the most popular countries to see them. Also known as the Aurora Borealis, the lights have fascinated, scared, and inspired humans for centuries.
  • The country generates over 99% of its electricity from renewable sources, with hydroelectricity responsible for around 80%, and geothermal responsible for 20%
