Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic to the east and is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and the Caribbean Sea to the south and west.
Port-au-Prince, the capital and largest city in the nation is known for its vibrant art scene, historical landmarks, and bustling markets. Cap-Haïtien is renowned for its colonial architecture and the nearby Citadelle Laferrière, a giant fortress and UNESCO World Heritage site. Jacmel, known for its well-preserved French colonial architecture and vibrant arts community, is another city that showcases Haiti's cultural diversity.

The country’s rich heritage is deeply rooted in its history as the first independent black republic and the only nation to successfully abolish slavery through a revolution but was forced to repay a debt for this independence to France until 1947.
