Fiji country facts

  • Fiji has three official languages, these are English, Fijian Hindi and Fijian. English is a subject taught in most schools within Fiji, so it is now one of the official language spoken on the island.
  • Rugby is the national sport of Fiji, with one in ten of the population signing up to play the sport. It was introduced to Fiji by the British when they ruled the islands.
  • The practice of hot stone walking started in Fiji, over five hundred years ago it was introduced by the Sawau tribe on the Bega Island. This tradition was handed down and is still practised in tourist spots of Fiji.
  • Unless you’re the chief, wearing sunglasses or a hat in a Fijan village is best avoided to respect the local custom.
  • The Fiji Museum holds archaeological evidence to suggest that the practice of cannibalism dates back from than 2,500 years there. The Last recorded incident of cannibalism in Fiji was in the 1860s with the death of missionary Reverend Thomas Baker. The arrival of missionaries and the spread of Christianity ended this practice. Fijians have embraced their history and today you can go on cannibal cave tours and buy souvenirs that nod to this practice.
