Colombia country facts
  • With coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Colombia is the only South American country to enjoy this dual maritime advantage.
  • Colombia is the second most biodiverse country in the world, only after Brazil. The country has the highest amount of species by area in the world, that includes more species of birds than North America and Europe combined.
  • There are native pink dolphins in the waters of Colombia, these Amazon freshwater dolphins have a very distinctive pink hue to their colouring.
  • Colombia is one of the world’s largest coffee exporters with over 500,000 coffee-farming families located all over Colombia. It is also the world’s leading source of emeralds, and the country's mineral wealth also extends to significant coal and oil reserves.
  • The diverse music scene of Columbia ranges from cumbia and vallenato, traditional coastal music, to salsa and modern reggaeton. This rich musical heritage is celebrated across the country, particularly at festivals like the Vallenato Legend Festival in Valledupar. The country’s vibrant music scene has produced the superstar singer Shakira and the timeless voice of Juanes.
  • Colombia is famously the homeland of Gabriel García Márquez, one of the most significant authors of the 20th century. His works, particularly "One Hundred Years of Solitude", which is a cornerstone of magical realism, have left a profound impact on both Colombian and global literature.
  • Originally named New Granada under Spanish rule, the region gained independence in 1819 and was renamed Gran Colombia by Simón Bolívar, in honour of the explorer Christopher Columbus. The state of Gran Colombia eventually dissolved, leading to the creation of several new countries, including the Republic of New Granada. In 1886, following several name changes and reorganisations, the country adopted its current name, the Republic of Colombia, reflecting both its historical and revolutionary heritage.
