  • The Joya de Cerén Archaeological Site is the only UNESCO World Heritage Site you can find in El Salvador. The site preserves an ancient Mayan village, which is often referred to as the “Pompeii of the Americas”.
  • In Spanish, the name of the country “El Salvador” translates to “The Saviour”, after Jesus Christ. The country’s population predominantly identify as Roman Catholic, which has a huge influence on its culture and motto: “Dios, Unión, Libertad” (God, union, liberty).
  • For those with a keen interest in surfing, there are few better countries in the world to visit than El Salvador. 
  • Punta Roca and Punta Mango are some of the best locations to surf in all of Central America during May and October.
  • El Salvador is known as the “Land of Volcanoes”, due to there being around 20 active volcanoes in the country that are still active. The Santa Ana Volcano is the most famous in El Salvador, due to its high elevation of 2,381 metres above sea level. There are even 5 volcanoes on the country’s flag.
  • The official currency of El Salvador is surprisingly the US dollar. They adopted it as their official currency in 2001, which helped to stabilise their economy following a period of instability.
